Six Kitchen Trends for 2016

It’s hard to believe, but 2016 is right around the corner! With a new year comes new design trends and in the new year you can expect to see some interesting changes to the kitchen. If you’re preparing to redesign your kitchen, or you’re starting from scratch in a brand new house, keep these six kitchen trends in mind throughout 2016:

  1. Gray Cabinets
Bright colored cabinets, white cabinets and natural wood grain cabinets are on the decline. The one cabinet finish that’s increasing in popularity is gray cabinets. It’s a neutral color, but it still adds personality to the space. Not only is it new and updated, but it also pairs well with stainless steel appliances and fixtures, natural stone countertops and bold accent colors in small appliances, paint colors and backsplashes.
  1. Big Kitchen Islands
In many kitchens across the country, homeowners are moving to a more transitional style and electing to replace their kitchen table with a large, family-friendly kitchen island. Why? Islands can pull double- and triple-duty, serving as kitchen prep areas, homework areas and eating areas. Sized right and properly equipped with prep sinks, charging stations, extra storage, dishwasher drawers and even beverage centers, islands are an ideal way to facilitate family and entertainment gathering areas.
  1. Wood Counters
Even with so many natural stone surfaces available, wood counters are gaining in popularity. Not only are wood counters durable and great work surfaces, but they also add character into the kitchen space. Depending on the rest of the finishes in the space, wood counters can look rustic, natural or warm. Paired with new stainless steel appliances and new tile backsplashes, traditional wood counters can appear modern and fresh. With a variety of stains available, you can customize your wood counters to match or compliment furniture and flooring.
  1. Room for Technology
Ten years ago, the kitchen was not a place for technology. We cooked meals based on recipes and weren’t dependent on smartphones or tablets to get the job done. Today, technology is a large part of the kitchen and cooking experience. Many kitchen designs now include flat screen TVs, docking stations for phones and tablets, USB port outlets and more. If you’re planning a kitchen remodel in 2016, consider implementing technology into your designs!
  1. Mix it Up!
Ensuring that each metal fixture in your kitchen matches perfectly is a thing of the past! Feel free to mix it up in 2016. Incorporate varied metal finishes in your kitchen for a unique and eclectic look. Done right, gold, stainless steel, copper and more can work together in harmony and give your kitchen an individual feel.
  1. The Kitchen Sink
You don’t have to settle for the standard stainless steel sink found in so many kitchens! When homeowners are willing to work with metal cabinet hardware in a finish other than stainless steel or chrome, choosing a new sink can make all the difference. By adding a white or even colored sink into your kitchen design, you can work with a number of metals and make them work harmoniously in your space.
